Squatters evicted from Mexico City building, tunnel found

MEXICO CITY – Squatters evicted from an apartment building in a posh Mexico City neighbourhood had apparently tunneled through the building’s foundations to get into the house next door.

The building on the edge of Mexico City’s Condesa neighbourhood had been taken over by members of the Assembly of Barrios, a rough-and-tumble squatters group.

While there had long been rumours that drugs were sold out of the apartments, few suspected what police would find when they raided the building Wednesday as part of a suit to regain control of the property.

The inhabitants had tunneled through the buildings foundations into the basement of an adjoining house.

Three underground chambers were found, though their use was unclear.

Police removed the residents, citing structural problems. They also found heaps of powerful fireworks.
