Film vignettes get noticed by UBCM

KAMLOOPS – Short film vignettes showcasing the history and culture of the Thompson Nicola Regional District were recognized as a best general practice this week.

An honourable mention was bestowed on the district for the creation of several small commercial-like films as a promotional and economic development tool. The vignettes covered the making of the German film Gold, geocaching in Clinton and Big Bar, Desert Daze music festival in Spences Bridge, the Ashcroft Terminal, Logan Lake Days, Echo Valley Ranch and Spa and Cariboo Trails Combined Racing at Huber Farms in 70 Mile House.

The City of Kelowna won the general best practices category for a reporting system geared towards mobile phone users. The program allows people to request services from their cell phone.

The Union of B.C. Municipalities recognizes communities across the province at the annual convention as a way to share winning ideas. Last year the Columbia Shuswap Regional District won the leadership and innovation award for the Salmon Arm Landfill project.

Candidates submit a summary of the project and must also include information on how the program or project has improved services to the community, whether it has improved accountability to the community or had an economic impact.
