Government grants boost local sporting events

Penticton received government funds for five local sports organizations to help them put on events over the winter season.

The province granted $242,000 from the Hosting B.C. program, spreading it across 64 events in 25 communities for a variety of sports.

The alpine skiing event Nor Am Cup received $5,000, while a freestyle event titled Nor Am Freestyle Frenzy accepted $3,000. The Canadian Junior Nationals freestyle skiing have $3,000 and the Boston Pizza Junior Triathalon added $3,000 to their event budget. In curling, the 2013 World Financial Group Continental Cup presented by Monsanto received $7,500.

The Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development "Hosting B.C." initiative is administered by viaSport. ViaSport is a not-for-profit organization responsible for providing strategic leadership to amateur sport in B.C. It is a legacy organization of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and formerly the B.C. Sport Agency.
