Private Alabama school discovers 10 sexual assault victims

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A private school in Alabama says it’s learned 10 students were victims of sexual misconduct by employees between the 1970s and the 1990s.

News outlets report the Altamont School in Birmingham hired a company to review possible sexual misconduct. School officials say the investigation started after some graduates contacted them about misconduct. The school says it’s sending information to Birmingham police

A letter from Principal Christopher Durst and Board President Michael S. Denniston was sent to more than 4,000 current and former students, and a private firm interviewed 35 people, including survivors, former students, current and former employees and trustees.

Reports of misconduct included inappropriate dating between employees and students, sexually abusive interactions, unwanted attention, unwanted touching, and sexual intercourse.

The report said none of allegations involve current employees.
