Regional district board faces ‘hard decision’ to locate South Okanagan composting facility

PENTICTON – The establishment of a regional food waste composting facility in the South Okanagan will depend on the political strength of will now that two proposed sites have been turned down.

Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen solid waste coordinator Cameron Baughen says the facility won’t be built without that political will because any location will involve opposition from the public.

“We’ve studied this for some time and we need to ensure the board understands if they are going to look at locating a composting site, they have to realize it won’t be a simple process," Baughen says. "There will be people opposed to it no matter where it’s built, and if there is no political desire to see it through, we won’t be moving forward.”

The regional district wants to build a $15 million, state of the art composting facility, but the top two locations have been rejected.

There was strong public opposition to a proposed site on Marron Valley Road west of Kaleden due to concerns about odour and truck traffic.

Summerland council turned down the second prime location at the Summerland landfill last week.

Baughen says regional district staff are working to come up with other site options to present to the board, but there are no obvious choices. Six site options were originally considered and the two best have been shot down.

"If the (board) wants to remove food waste from the landfill, it won’t be a simple thing. It’s going to be a hard decision and directors are going to have to decide whether the benefits of food waste diversion from the landfill outweigh the political consequences of proceeding," he says.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
