Kelowna man awaiting sentence for years spent molesting his six-year-old daughter

KELOWNA – The family of a little girl whose father molested her from age six to nine will have to wait another week to find out his prison sentence.

Crown prosecutor Patricia O’Neil said in Kelowna Provincial Court today, Nov. 2, that a pre-sentence report says the 32-year-old man believed he was having a consensual, romantic relationship with his daughter and “that his daughter even liked it.”

His lawyer, David Johnson, says his client misspoke.

“He was just trying to convey that it wasn’t a case where she actively resisted him,” he said. “If she would have said no he would have immediately stopped.”

The man's identity is not being revealed to protect the identity of his daughter. 

The presentence report indicated a history of compulsive sexual behavior, persistent and repetitive sexual urges and a high risk to reoffend.

After the years of molestation were discovered, he moved to Vancouver where he was arrested when police found him using a cell phone while parked outside a Vancouver elementary school. 

He says he has seen several counsellors for his addiction to pornography and pleaded guilty to charges of sexually assaulting a minor.

When given a chance to speak, he said he was shocked at the presentence report.

"I don’t blame someone else. I made the horrible mistake and I hurt my daughter," he said. "I made a mistake so big I felt I couldn’t even ask for help. I was terrified and I didn't know what to do.

"I swear to God… that nothing like this will ever happen again.”

Judge Gregory Koturbash will deliver his sentenced later this month. Crown is asking for six years in prison.
