Further assessments for 95-year-old dementia patient charged with murder
VERNON, B.C. – A 95-year-old Vernon, B.C., man will have further assessments before a decision is made on whether he should stand trial for second-degree murder.
John Furman, who is being held in a secure psychiatric facility, was charged after the Aug. 18 death of his roommate in an extended care home in the North Okanagan city.
RCMP believe 85-year-old William May was the victim of an apparent assault.
Furman and May had been roommates for just a few days when May died at the Polson Special Care Facility, which treats dementia patients or people with psychiatric or behavioural issues.
Furman, a decorated Second World War veteran, is due back in court Nov. 27.
The Crown has already said it will likely drop the murder charge if Furman is ruled not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder. (CKIZ)
