Gay pride rainbow flags cut down in Swedish city

STOCKHOLM – Officials in the Swedish city of Sodertalje say vandals have removed rainbow flags that were raised outside city hall in support of the gay pride festival this week in neighbouring Stockholm.

City officials said the flags were hoisted Monday but were gone Tuesday morning and the flagpole ropes had been cut.

Sodertalje spokesman Henri Tagot said new rainbow flags would be raised Tuesday but taken down overnight “to prevent this from happening again.”

The city of 93,000, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of Stockholm, doesn’t have its own pride festival but a local youth group is participating in the pride parade in Stockholm on Saturday.
