Canada beats Puerto Rico 73-48 to qualify for 2014 Women’s World Championships

XALAPA, Mexico – Kim Gaucher had 14 points to lead Canada to a 73-48 victory over Puerto Rico at the FIBA Americas on Friday.

With the win, Canada qualifies for the gold medal at the tournament, and guarantees its spot in the 2014 FIBA Women’s World Championship in Turkey. It’s the third time in a row that Canada has qualified for the world championship.

Gaucher picked up 11 rebounds and three assists, while Natalie Achonwa had 11 points in the victory.

Canada built an 18-point lead early while holding Puerto Rico to just eight points in the first quarter. Canada took a 39-26 lead into halftime.

Carla Cortijo led Puerto Rico with 22 points.

Canada will play for the gold medal on Saturday while Puerto Rico will play for bronze.

The top three finishers qualify for the worlds.
