New Supreme Court nominee to appear before parliamentary committee

OTTAWA – Marc Nadon will make his first public appearance today since being nominated to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada.

He is to appear before a House of Commons committee, which is expected to approve his appointment.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper this week nominated Nadon to fill the opening on the court created by the mandatory retirement of former justice Morris Fish in August.

Nadon served on the Federal Court of Appeal and is, among other things, a recognized expert in maritime law.

His selection by Harper comes after an all-party panel of MPs gave the prime minister a short list of three qualified candidates.

Nadon’s appointment will mean a ratio of six men to three women on the high court, a gender imbalance some have criticized.
