Spain: Far-left parties reach deal to join up for June vote

MADRID – Spain’s far-left Podemos and United Left parties say they have reached a tentative deal to join together in a coalition for the country’s June election.

Analysts and polls have said a linkup between the two gives them a shot at winning more votes and parliamentary seats than the country’s No. 2 Socialists.

The centre-left Socialists have alternated in power with the current No. 1 conservative Popular Party since Spain’s return to democracy decades ago.

Spaniards hold a repeat vote June 26 after a Dec. 20 election yielded a fractured result with no parties able to form a government.

The December vote ended the country’s two-party dominance with the emergence of Podemos and the business-friendly Ciudadanos party.

Podemos and the much smaller United Left announced the deal Monday.
