BRISTOL, Va. – Police in Virginia say officers responding to a report of a suicidal person fatally shot a man who raised a shotgun toward them.
Virginia State Police said in a statement that police in Bristol were called to a home Monday night and found 71-year-old Paul Meade inside. Police say officers ordered Meade to show his hands, but instead Meade raised a shotgun toward the officers. That’s when police say two officers fired at him.
Meade died at the scene. His body was being taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for autopsy.
No officers were injured. Media outlets report the officers are on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
A call to a police spokesman wasn’t immediately returned.
Bristol is in southwest Virginia along the Tennessee line.
