Heavy rains cause $2.7M in crop losses in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Heavy rains in Puerto Rico have set off small landslides, knocked out water service and caused nearly $2.7 million in crop losses.

Government officials said Monday that they expect to activate the National Guard as a result of widespread flooding. The heavy rain began Sunday and is expected to continue through Wednesday.

Agriculture Secretary Myrna Comas says the U.S. territory’s central and northern regions have reported the worst crop losses.

The rains also have blocked 13 dams across the island, causing interruption in water service to 5,000 customers.
