Dead Poets founder visits 300th grave ahead of Dead Poets Remembrance Day
PORTLAND, Maine – A Maine man who’s devoted himself to honouring the memory of poets from the past has now visited 300 gravesites of poets ahead of this weekend’s fourth annual Dead Poets Remembrance Day.
Walter Skold of Freeport reached the 300-grave milestone Monday when he visited the burial sites of three poets in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass.
Skold began visiting and documenting the graves of poets in 2009 in an effort to draw attention to dead and largely forgotten bards. His ultimate goal is to visit 500 gravesites.
Skold also helped create Dead Poets Remembrance Day, which kicks off Friday and continues through the weekend with poetry readings at burial sites in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Illinois and California.
