PENTICTON – Five new councillors were elected in the Penticton Indian Band's byelection yesterday, Nov. 23.
The new councillors are Kyle Alec, Ernest Jack, Fredrick “Fred” Kruger, Joan Phillip and Inez Pierre, according to a media release.
More than 200 ballots were cast with five declared spoiled.
Council will reconvene on Dec. 5, moving ahead with scheduling for community engagement and reconciliation within the community.
"We are so proud of all of our community members and their passion for being involved. We welcome the newly elected council and look forward to their fresh perspectives as they each contribute their own personal and professional experience for the whole of the community,” band Chief Chad Eneas said in the release.
The byelection took place after several council members resigned over governance issues over the summer. Other band members called for a dissolution of the present council, claiming there were insufficient numbers remaining on council to form a quorum.
