MEXICO CITY – Mexicans have left candles and flowers for expressionist painter Francisco Toledo, one day after he died at the age of 79.
In a country where politicians talk endlessly about defending Mexican culture and identity, Toledo actually did it.
His art was a celebration of the mystical world, the animal spirits and colour of Oaxaca’s indigenous cultures.
Toledo gained a reputation for never yielding to power, money or influence. He fought battles to save green spaces and historic buildings, to make art accessible to the public, and to oppose a fast-food chain opening in his beloved Oaxaca City.
The cause of his death and final funeral plans have yet to be announced.
But people erected impromptu traditional offerings of flowers and candles in his memory Friday in Oaxaca and Mexico City.
