MEXICO CITY – Authorities in the Mexican state of Michoacan say that eight men were killed and two soldiers and one state police officer were wounded following a shootout.
The army said in a statement Friday that the clash occurred during heightened operations in the area. The shooting took place in the community of Zimanca near the border with Jalisco.
The army and state police have set up checkpoints and increased patrols in the municipalities of Buenavista and Apatzingan to improve security in the region known as Tierra Caliente.
The army says the incident is under investigation.
