iN PHOTOS: Holi festival of colours a celebration of spring in Kamloops, Okanagan

Vibrant colours have been filling skies over campuses and city parks this spring in Kamloops and the Okanagan in celebration of Holi, a traditional Hindu celebration.

Holi marks springs arrival, the triumph of good over evil and the legendary love between Hindu deities Radha and Krishna, according to History.com.

One of the biggest Hindu celebrations, Holi dates back to the fourth century and is observed around the globe.

In India, Holi is a national holiday that begins the night before where bonfires are lit and there's singing and dancing. Sometimes leaves are thrown into the fire to symbolized letting go of negativity and welcoming a new positive season.

The next day colours and water are tossed to celebrate the love between Radha and Krishna and create a sense of community and unity, with each colour symbolizing a different emotion or element of nature.

Every spring the festival date changes as it is based on part of the Hindu lunar calendar, this year landing on March 25.

A celebration was held on April 7 in Kamloops central Riverside Park. 

Kamloops Holi: Festival of Colours was put on by the Kamloops India Club and supported by Downtown Kamloops, and the crowds, vibrant colours and joy were captured by several photographers.
