Palestinian killed in violence along border with Israel

GAZA, Palestinian Territory – Gaza’s Health Ministry says a Palestinian was killed and 24 injured by Israeli fire at a border protest.

Witnesses said he was shot Friday as protesters rushed the fence.

Israel’s military said militants tried to throw an explosive device at soldiers near the border. It said their bomb exploded inside Gaza and injured several Palestinians.

The Islamic militant group Hamas that rules Gaza has for months led weekly border protests.

Over 125 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since they began.

Israel says it is defending its border and accuses Hamas of using the protests as cover for attempts to breach the fence and carry out attacks.

The rallies are aimed in part at drawing attention to the Israeli-Egyptian blockade imposed after Hamas assumed control of Gaza in 2007.
