RIO DE JANEIRO – Bus and metro services in several Brazilian cities have been reduced and several flights have been cancelled as a truckers’ strike enters its sixth day.
Brazil’s public security ministry issued a statement Saturday saying that about 20 per cent of more than 500 areas where truckers had been blocking the roads have been cleared.
But that doesn’t mean truckers are returning to work.
The truckers are protesting hikes in diesel prices and demanding higher pay.
On Thursday, the government and several transportation unions said they reached an agreement to suspend the strike for 15 days to negotiate a solution. But thousands of truckers continue striking
On Friday, President Michel Temer authorized the use of military force. So far, security forces have not moved against truckers.
