City of Kamloops wants to know what you think about pot shop regulations

KAMLOOPS – As the intended date for federal marijuana legalization approaches, provinces and cities across Canada are beginning to plan out regulations for when the day comes.

After yesterday's announcement of future regulations from the provincial government such as a minimum age for purchase, the issue was brought to the Dec. 5 Kamloops City Council meeting.

When recreational pot is deemed legal, how will the City regulate dispensaries and ensure they're operating appropriately? That's what council wants the public's help on.

Later this month, residents will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on dispensary regulations with the City.

Potential regulations were discussed in yesterday's meeting, including amending the business licence bylaw to directly address marijuana dispensaries.

The public hearing is scheduled to take place in two weeks, after the Dec. 19 city council meeting.

The vote to approve the motion for a public hearing passed by a 7-2 vote, with Councillors Arjun Singh and Denis Walsh opposed to the motion.
