Tennessee deputy shoots suspect following confrontation

HUNTSVILLE, Tenn. – Authorities say a Tennessee sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a man following a confrontation that happened while deputies were trying to serve a warrant at a residence.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that the shooting happened Monday evening in the unincorporated community of Helenwood in the northern part of the state.

The statement says 49-year-old Arthur Earnest Letner was wounded and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He remained hospitalized on Tuesday afternoon. TBI spokeswoman Leslie Earhart said the suspect is white. She referred questions about the deputy’s race to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.

A woman who answered the phone at the sheriff’s department declined to comment.
