Week-old baby among 6 dead from flooding in Colombia

BOGOTA – Six people including an 8-day-old baby were killed when their home was washed away Thursday by heavy rains in the southern Colombian city of Cali.

Rescuers managed to pull three people alive from the collapsed two-story home in a poor neighbourhood of the city. Among the dead were five minors including the baby.

Heavy rains have been battering several parts of Colombia the past few weeks. But the midday storm Thursday in Cali was particularly strong and knocked down dozens of trees. Authorities said more than 100 workers were checking to make sure other people weren’t left homeless or injured.
