No timeline for residents to return to homes near Alberta derailment site
STONY PLAIN, Alta. – A spokesman for CN says it’s too early for residents to be allowed to return to their homes near the site of a derailment west of Edmonton.
Warren Chandler says the railway had hoped a controlled burn on Sunday would get rid of potentially explosive propane in some of the tank cars.
But it turned out some of the propane remained, so officials are deciding what to do next.
Chandler says CN (TSX:CNR) is taking a step-by-step approach to determine the safest way to get people back to their homes.
Thirteen cars on a freight train carrying a cargo of oil and liquefied petroleum gas went off the rails near the tiny hamlet of Gainford, about 80 kilometres west of Edmonton, early Saturday.
No one was injured.
