Car windows smashed in Sun Peaks thieving spree
KAMLOOPS – Residents and visitors of the Sun Peaks area are being warned not to leave valuables in their vehicles after a rash of thefts last month.
According to an RCMP release today, Dec. 13, there were six thefts in Sun Peaks between Nov. 17 to 29.
“In three cases windows were broken to gain entry,” Staff Sgt. Doug Aird said in the release.
Tk’emlups rural RCMP are reminding residents to remove valuables from their parked vehicles.
“Thefts of this sort are not common in Sun Peaks and police believe the thief was staying up there for the week or may be a new permanent resident,” Aird said.
The crime spree appears to have started with a theft on Nov. 17 when a truck was broken into while parked in the Snowmobile Parking lot at Sun Peaks.
“The truck had its rear sliding window smashed and the back passenger door was left wide open,” Aird said.
An older Highmark avalanche pack, a backcountry access tracker 2 avalanche transceiver and a small toolbox with assorted tools were taken.
A few days later, a set of skis and poles were taken from a rack in front of Bento’s Day Lodge in Sun Peaks.
On Nov. 27, 2017 police were called after a vehicle was broken into at Eagle Court in Sun Peaks. The back passenger window was smashed and an iPod with an engraving on the back was taken. The same day, police got a report that a pickup truck had been broken into overnight while it parked on Sundance Drive. Nothing was stolen but things were scattered around inside the truck. Also on Nov. 27, police were informed that a work truck was broken into overnight while parked in the 4000 block of Sundance Drive. Nothing appeared to be taken but everything that was in the truck was rummaged through.
On Nov. 29, RCMP received a report of a theft from a vehicle parked at the day parking lot at Sun Peaks sometime between Nov. 26 to 27.
“Point of entry was by smashing a back passenger side window. A duffel bag was rifled through and approximately $20 in loose change stolen,” Aird said.
Investigations into the thefts are ongoing. If you see something suspicious in the area, you are asked to take note of any vehicle and suspect descriptions and call Tk’emlups Rural RCMP immediately.
There have been no further thefts since Nov. 29.
