Just call it Autummer as high temperatures approach records

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN – People in the Shuswap enjoyed a record breaking day Sunday and for much of the Thompson-Okanagan region it was a warm day, just not quite hot enough to break records.

In Salmon Arm, a temperature of 20.8 Celsius was enough to break a 40-year-old record and was well past the seasonal normal of 10 C and Merritt was also on the cusp of surpassing the 23.5 C record set in 1978.

In Kamloops, temperatures soared to 23.7 C, just shy of the 25 C record set in 1940 and Penticton saw temperatures also hit above 20 C, but was still 2.5 C below its 1940 record.

Today temperatures are again expected to be at least a few degrees above the 11-12 C normally seen at this time of year, with Kamloops expected to be the hot spot of the region with a high of 19 C. Temperatures will remain a few degrees above normal for the next several days.

Today also brings a 60 per cent chance of showers to Kamloops and rain with a risk of thunderstorms throughout the rest of the region. In Vernon the rain will continue through Thursday while Kelowna and Penticton will see a 40-60 per cent chance of showers Tuesday and rain on Wednesday and Thursday.
