No choice but to shoot mentally disturbed man, Toronto cop tells inquest
TORONTO – A Toronto police officer says his partner had no choice other than to shoot an emotionally disturbed man.
Const. Ehsan Haghshenas tells an inquest that Reyal Jardine-Douglas appeared on a “mission” to kill his partner that afternoon in August 2010.
He says Jardine-Douglas, 25, kept moving toward Const. Kyle Paterson while brandishing a knife.
Unable to back away, Paterson then shot Jardine-Douglas three times.
Haghshenas says there simply wasn’t any opportunity to try to calm the man down.
The inquest is looking into the Toronto police shooting deaths of Jardine-Douglas and two other mentally ill men.
