TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:
Toronto Stock Exchange (13,324.75 up 81.43 points):
Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Up 19 cents, or 3.68 per cent, at $5.36 on 12.14 million shares. The gold sector led advancers on the main index, rising 4.31 per cent to 186.02 points as bullion rose $16.30 to US$1,350.30 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN). Patent licensing. Down 92 cents, or 22.55 per cent, at $3.16 on 9.58 million shares. The company lost about a quarter of its value in heavy trading following after a jury in Texas ruled against the Ottawa-based company in a patent-infringement battle with Apple Inc.
Osisko Mining Corp. (TSX:OSK). Miner. Down four cents, or 0.76 per cent, at $5.22 on 9.3 million shares.
Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Miner. Up 38 cents, or 3.70 per cent, at $10.64 on 6.74 million shares.
Athabasca Oil Corp. (TSX:ATH). Oil and gas. Up 28 cents, or 4.57 per cent, at $6.41 on 6.37 million shares.
Toronto Venture Exchange (972.59 up 5.73 points):
Mindoro Resources Ltd. (TSXV:MIO). Miner. Unchanged at 2.5 cents on 8.49 million shares.
Unigold Inc. (TSXV:UGD). Mining exploration. Up 1.5 cents, or 23.08 per cent, at eight cents on 4.89 million shares.
Companies reporting major news:
Goldcorp Inc. (TSX:G). Miner. Up $1.19, or 4.48 per cent, at $27.76 on 3.34 million shares. Goldcorp beat analyst expectations even though third-quarter net earnings dropped to US$5 million from US$498 million in the same period last year, as revenues fell to US$929 million from US$1.3 billion, pulled down by weaker gold prices.
Loblaw Companies Ltd. (TSX:L). Grocer. Down 20 cents, or 0.42 per cent, to $47.75 on 322,874 shares. Canada’s largest grocer said it will provide long-term financial assistance to the victims and families affected by a deadly factory collapse in Bangladesh six months ago. The total amount was not disclosed.
Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX:RCI.B). Media and telecommunications. Down $1.25, or 2.66 per cent, at $45.83 on 1.88 million shares. Its third-quarter overall revenue was below analysts’ estimates as revenue from the wireless sector fell. Net income totalled $464 million, down from $466 million while operating revenue was up 1.26 per cent at $3.22 billion.
Telus Corp. (TSX:T). Telecommunications. Down 26 cents, or 0.71 per cent, at $36.21 on 993,891 shares. After the markets closed Wednesday, the federal government gave its thumbs up for Telus to buy struggling Public Mobile, primarily a talk-and-text service with 280,000 customers in Ontario and Quebec. It is also has reportedly restarted talks to acquire Mobilicity, another small wireless player. An earlier, $380-million bid to buy the company was rejected by Industry Canada in June.
