Kelowna jail guards re-issue strike notice

KELOWNA – Jail guards at the Kelowna RCMP detachment have re-issued a 72-hour strike notice effective Friday.

Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 338, the union representing the guards, says in a news release today, Dec. 19, that Commissionaires B.C. should revise its offer or agree to a bargaining session, and if so the union would consider putting strike action on hold.

“Kelowna jail guards work to keep their community safe every day, and they deserve to make a living wage,”CUPE National Representative and lead negotiator Harry Nott says in the release. “We have urged Commissionaires BC to reconsider their position, and meet with us prior to the beginning of this strike – we still believe this strike could be avoided.”

Guards first served the strike notice on Dec. 12, and the re-issuance of the notice will be effective Dec. 22 at 6 a.m.
