Libya militias seize radio station, mosque in IS bastion
BENGHAZI, Libya – Libyan militias battling Islamic State militants say they have seized a radio station and a mosque in the extremist group’s last remaining bastion in the North African country.
The media centre for the Libyan militias issued a statement claiming the victories and saying 18 militiamen and dozens of IS militants were killed in fierce fighting Tuesday in Sirte, the only city outside Syria and Iraq to have been taken over by IS.
The militants had used the radio station to broadcast speeches by IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Militias from the nearby city of Misrata launched an assault last month on Sirte. The militiamen rapidly advanced into the city but the offensive has bogged down in recent days as IS has carried out a series of suicide bombings.
