Attempts to suspend senators without pay mired in confusion as Senate Tories aim to end debate

OTTAWA – Debate is set to resume tomorrow on a motion to suspend three Senators without pay, amid an apparent difference of opinion in Conservative ranks.

The government leader in the Senate has suggested he’s open to amending the sanctions against former Conservatives Patrick Brazeau and Pamela Wallin.

Claude Carignan is expected to consult with the Conservative caucus in a closed-door meeting tomorrow morning about whether to amend the suspension proposals.

His olive branch hasn’t been extended to Mike Duffy.

Some Conservative senators have complained that the suspensions ignores due process and the rule of law.

It differs from the tough rhetoric Prime Minister Harper was voicing in radio interviews last week.

But Harper spokesman Jason MacDonald denies that Carignan is acting on behalf of the prime minister.

He says the prime minister’s office doesn’t direct the activities of the Senate.

Senate Conservatives are aiming to close off debate on the suspension measures and bring the matter to a vote by mid-week.
