More than a half dozen Kelowna townhouses damaged in early morning fire

KELOWNA – A townhouse fire in Kelowna caused extensive damage to at least six units early this morning and sent one person to hospital.

Platoon Capt. Tim Light says firefighters were called to the 1200-block of Cameron Avenue shortly after 12:30 a.m. this morning, Jan. 3.

A media release says flames were coming out the front of a ground floor deck of a two-storey townhouse.

“The fire was deep seated upon the arrival of the fire department and proved difficult to extinguish,” Light says. “The fire did extensive damage to several units of the complex."

Six units had “extensive damage” with another two having minor smoke damage.

The release says residents that will not be able to return to their units for at least 24 hours. A B.C. Transit bus was called in to help with the displaced families, who were taken to the Salvation Army building on Sutherland Avenue.

The fire cause is undetermined but RCMP and fire investigators are on scene early this morning.

“It has been reported that one person went to hospital as a result of the fire but the fire department cannot confirm this as of yet. RCMP are looking into this report,” Light says. “Kelowna Fire Department would like to remind the public to check your smoke detectors regularly as working smoke detectors save lives.”
