Queen of Nanaimo ferry to Gulf Islands out of service following docking accident
VANCOUVER – BC Ferries says a vessel involved in an accident as it left a ferry terminal this weekend sustained damaged and is out of service, cancelling all sailings between Tsawwassen and the southern Gulf Island until further notice.
The corporation says underwater inspection divers found the Queen of Nanaimo has damage to the propeller, shafting and hull from the Saturday incident at the Village Bay terminal on Mayne Island.
No injuries were reported.
BC Ferries says an investigation is underway into what caused the vessel to strike a private float as it backed out of the terminal around 10:45 a.m. with two passengers and 22 crew on board.
High winds in the region led to the cancellation of other sailings between Vancouver Island and the Mainland on Saturday.
Ferry service to the southern Gulf Islands will be available only from the Swartz Bay terminal near Victoria, on Vancouver Island until the Queen of Nanaimo is repaired.
