Penticton youth centre one-third of the way towards fundraising goal

PENTICTON – Penticton’s proposed youth centre moved a giant step forward in the past month as funds flood in for the initiative.

One month after the launch of a fundraising campaign to raise $3 million to buy the property at 501 Main Street for the youth centre, $1 million has been raised, according to a Community Foundation of the South Okanagan-Similkameen media release issued today, Jan. 4.

Grade 11 student Sarah Wood, who is a Youth Engagement Strategy steering committee member, says they appreciate every donation and can’t wait for the future of the youth resource centre to open.

“We aren’t done yet, but being one third of the way to our $3 million goal after 30 days is fantastic,” fundraising chair Judy Lloyd says in the release.

The youth centre is intended to be a safe, youth-friendly place where young people can come for a range of resources and supports to help them grow in self esteem and become healthy adults.

The Community Foundation is scheduled to take possession of the building on Jan. 15. The building will also be home to Foundry Penticton, which is run by the Penticton and District Community Resources Society.

Donations of any size can be made online at the Community Foundation's website here, or by calling the foundation office at 250-493-9311.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
