OTTAWA – Alberta Conservative backbench MP Ted Menzies is resigning his seat in the House of Commons, effective immediately.
The member for the riding of Macleod has tweeted a brief statement with the hashtag “movingon.”
Menzies, a well-liked and respected member of the Conservative caucus, was first elected in 2004 and won re-election three times.
The 61-year-old farmer was a junior minister for finance between January 2011 and last July.
He was also a parliamentary secretary to a number of ministers during his time in office.
His departure leaves the Conservatives with 160 Commons seats, the NDP with 100 and the Liberals with 34. The Bloc Quebecois has four and the Green party one, while there are four independents and four vacancies.
