Penticton spending $50K to support Adventure Racing world championship

City hopes fall 2025 adventure race will add $2.5M to economy

Penticton city council has voted to provide financial assistance to the upcoming Adventure Racing world championship to the tune of $50,000.

The world-class race will see athletes hike, mountain bike and paddle 700 kilometres throughout the province with the finish line in open in Penticton for 10 days, according to a City of Penticton media release issued, May 9. The fastest teams are expected to finish in five days.

Along with the finish line, Penticton will host the race sign-up, conference and expo.

Jeff Plant with the city said the race, scheduled for September 2025, will showcase Penticton and the region to a world audience.

“We all know we’re so lucky to call such a spectacular setting home and this is a chance to promote Penticton and inject a serious economic boost during shoulder season,” Plant said in the release. “Hosting this world championship will add to our reputation as the place to be for these types of events.”

The adventure race will bring more than 440 athletes and 1,700 support crew members from around the world.

The city expects its $50,000 — $40,000 in cash and $10,000 for in-kind support — will translate into $2.5 million in direct and in-direct economic spinoffs.

Hoodoo Adventures helped to bring the adventure race to the South Okanagan.
