Suspect behind bars after string of assaults in downtown Merritt

A man known to police is in custody following a string of violent incidents in Merritt’s downtown core Wednesday.

Officers were called to the downtown eight times over eight hours the evening of May 8 about a man who was assaulting people who just happened to be in the area, according to a Merritt RCMP media release.

Police caught up with the suspect at around 9:30 p.m. in the Diamondvale neighbourhood.

The people who were assaulted weren’t seriously injured and are getting help from local victim services.

Kevin Edward Young, 35, of no fixed address remains in custody and is scheduled to make a court appearance on Monday.

Young is well known to Merritt RCMP and is facing a total of 12 charges including four counts of assault, three counts of uttering threats, four breaches and one mischief charge.
