ABC News says anchor Elizabeth Vargas being treated for alcohol dependency

NEW YORK, N.Y. – ABC News anchor Elizabeth Vargas is in treatment for alcohol dependency.

Vargas and the network confirmed Wednesday a New York Daily News story about her treatment. Vargas, who is 51 and married to singer-songwriter Marc Cohn, is anchor of the newsmagazine “20/20” and last appeared on the network in October.

Vargas says she realized she was becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol. She says that if going public with her problem gives someone else the courage to seek help, she will be grateful.

ABC says Vargas has been in treatment at a facility for a couple of weeks and has a few weeks more to go before coming home.
