Broadway’s summer romance with Zachary Levi’s ‘First Date’ ends; show to close in January
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Like most summer romances, Broadway’s affair with “First Date” is ending with the arrival of cold weather.
Producers of the musical comedy starring “Chuck” star Zachary Levi and “Smash” star Krysta Rodriguez said late Wednesday that the show will close after Jan. 5. It will have played 34 previews and 174 regular performances.
In “First Date,” by “Gossip Girl” writer Austin Winsberg, Rodriguez plays Casey, an artsy-cool downtown hottie who is a little abrasive after years of serial dating. She meets the sweet but slightly nerdy Aaron, played by Levi, at a bar.
Over the course of 90 minutes, the two try to get to know each other despite dreamlike interruptions from relatives, friends and old lovers. It opened Aug. 8 to warm to mixed reviews.
