RCMP surround Vernon home, arrest suspect
VERNON – A suspect is in custody and Vernon RCMP are building a case after a dynamic police incident Saturday afternoon.
What exactly happened is going to be a mystery for now, known only to those who saw what happened behind All Saints Anglican church.
Police cordoned off 26th Street around 1:30 p.m. to keep the public safe. Officers surrounded a home in the 3300 block.
“It wasn’t a standoff.”
That from RCMP Sgt. Kara Triance who said it was a serious police incident but there is no longer any danger to the public. A suspect was caught and arrested.
“At this point I’m not in a position to release investigative details,” Triance said in an interview with InfoTel News on Sunday. “A media release will be coming tomorrow (Monday) morning.”
Investigators are working hard on the case, taking statements from witnesses and conducting photo lineups.
“We just don’t want to taint the investigation by releasing anything to the media just yet,” she said. “We don’t want to compromise the investigation.”
The RCMP also aren’t releasing any details about the person they took into custody.
“We’re going to show a photo lineup and if we show that photo lineup with details about the person we arrested (made public) then what happens is we taint that photo lineup,” according to Triance. “It’s no longer useful in court.”
InfoTel News will have a reporter at the RCMP’s scheduled news conference Monday morning to find out what happened.
