Police in El Salvador kill 5 suspected gang members

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Police in El Salvador say they have killed five suspected members of an organized crime gang in a shootout outside the capital of San Salvador.

The national police force said Monday that five suspected members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang died in the confrontation in a rural area about 25 miles (40 kilometres) east of the capital.

Police say they were patrolling in the area when they saw 10 people at a house and recognized one as a suspect in the August 15 killing of a police officer.

Police said the gang members opened fire on the patrol. A confrontation ensued and five suspects escaped.

Police have engaged in about 300 shootouts so far this year. In the same period, 26 police have been killed.
