Food Truck Rally rolls back into Kelowna

KELOWNA – For the second year in a row, the parking lot of Prospera Place will be flooded with hundreds of hungry diners and around half a dozen trucks representing cuisine from around the world.

Craig Campbell is the Communications Manager for Prospera Place and the organizer of the second annual Kelowna Food Truck Rally. He says the rally is a way to let Kelowna know they are back again for the entire summer.

“It went really well last year,” he says. “It’s different from burger and fry shops. There’s a lot of artisan food, healthy options and worldly options as well.”

The rally takes place tonight from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Prospera Place parking lot. Among the trucks are Mustard Tiger, Surfside Taco, Angelina’s Italian Beef, Marno’s Woodfire Pizza and TNT Dynamite Foods.

Campbell says although the rally is just for one night, the trucks can be found in the parking lot throughout the summer.

“Any day of the week we can have two, three, five trucks (here) depending on their schedule,” he says.

The appeal, Campbell says, is eating in a place where the emphasis is placed on food rather than maintaining a traditional restaurant.

“A lot of these trucks are run by chef’s or ex-chef’s that don’t want to conform to stationary kitchens,” he says.  “It’s definitely something you should try because you’re getting some really cool food and you’re getting to talk to the people that make it. You get a bit more of an experience and a lot of these people are fun themselves.”

Last year the rally served around 400 people and Campbell recommends hungry diners show up early or risk missing out.

“All of them sold out of their food last year so there were a few disappointed people who rolled up later in the evening,” he says. “Food trucks can only bring a certain amount of inventory so once that’s gone it’s gone.”

Campbell says he hopes this will be the second of many years the rally takes place at their location.

“As long as food trucks are popular and they want to come back we’re happy to have them.”
