Murdered soldier remembered online

OTTAWA – We are learning more about the soldier killed in Wednesday’s shooting at Parliament Hill.

He was Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, a reservist from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment. Cirillo was standing guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, carrying an unloaded rifle, when he was gunned down. Cirillo, from Hamilton, Ont., was shot twice in the chest. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

According to a fundraising page, Cirillo was married with a son. The proud soldier posted photos of his regiment to Instagram, describing one group picture as a ‘family photo’ and adding the hashtag #brothers. The dog lover also shared many photos of his German Shepherd. The last photo he posted shows him in Argyll regalia beside a fellow soldier with the words 'Just another day at work.' Cirillo is a former Good Life Fitness employee. He joined the cadets at age 13.

Facebook pages and Twitter accounts were created Wednesday. People who knew him shared that he was a stand up guy, a great father, and someone who could always make you laugh.

According to the CBC, members of Cirillo’s unit have been put on a communication lockdown, and are being told not to speak about the incident itself.
