Senior leader of Haqqani militant network shot dead in Pakistani capital

ISLAMABAD – A Pakistani Taliban commander and an intelligence official say a senior leader of the feared militant Haqqani network has been shot dead in Islamabad.

The commander, Ahsanullah Ahsan, and the intelligence official say that Nasiruddin Haqqani was killed Sunday night on the outskirts of Pakistan’s capital in area called Bhara Kahu.

Nasiruddin’s body was afterward taken to the town of Miran Shah in the North Waziristan tribal area where he is to be buried Monday afternoon.

The intelligence official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media.

The Afghan Haqqani network was founded by Jalaluddin Haqqani and is one of the most feared militant groups fighting U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Nasiruddin Haqqani is Jalaluddin Haqqani’s son. His brother, Sirajuddin Haqqani, currently leads the group.
