Ex-major leaguer Offerman says he is not trying to avoid US lawsuit for 2007 bat attack
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Ex-major leaguer Jose Offerman says he is not trying to avoid a U.S. lawsuit for attacking two players with a bat during a minor league game in Connecticut six years ago.
The two-time All-Star infielder said Monday he is “not missing” as a lawyer has suggested, but living in his homeland of the Dominican Republic. He works as an assistant to the general manager of a winter team.
An attorney for ex-Bridgeport Bluefins catcher John Nathans has said he has tried to serve Offerman with discovery documents for months with no success.
In a 2007 minor league game in Connecticut, Offerman hit two opposing players with a bat. Nathans suffered a head injury that ended his career.
A $4.8 million lawsuit against Offerman and his former team, the Long Island Ducks, is pending.
