Killer pleads guilty to escape while on day pass, taking people hostage
EDMONTON – A convicted killer has pleaded guilty to escaping while on a prison day pass and to taking several people hostage in Alberta.
William Bicknell, who is 45, faced several charges and admitted to unlawful confinement, escaping lawful custody and robbery.
He was serving time at Drumheller Institution when he overtook his guard while on a trip to visit his sister in Edmonton in 2011.
Bicknell was on the run for 10 days before he was wounded by Mounties during a dramatic shootout and car chase.
Court heard that while he was free, he took at least two people hostage.
Bicknell was convicted of second-degree murder in 2003 for the beating death of a woman from British Columbia.
