Kelowna driver nabbed doing almost 90 km/h in school zone

A Kelowna RCMP speed trap caught a driver going well over the speed limit in a school zone on Monday.

Officers with the Municipal Traffic Section were enforcing the 30 km/h speed limit at Raymer Elementary School in the South Pandosy neighbourhood at around 11:30 a.m., June 17, when a driver was clocked going 88 km/h.

RCMP said the driver was charged with excessive speeding and their vehicle was impounded for seven days. RCMP don’t say what kind of vehicle the person was driving.

“By driving at a safe speed and distance, you give yourself more time to stop,” Kelowna RCMP Sgt. Colby Attlesey said in a media release issued today, June 20.

“As per the RoadSafetyBC website, a pedestrian hit at 30km/h has a 90% chance of surviving. A pedestrian hit at 50km/h has an 80% chance of being killed. Please slow down and obey the speed limits.”
