GUATEMALA CITY – A newspaper journalist and a radio station worker were found dead in a cane field Thursday with gunshot wounds to their heads in the southwestern department of Suchitepequez.
A police report identified the victims as Laurent Angel Castillo and Luis Alfredo De Leon. The men, ages 28 and 30, respectively, were discovered with their hands and feet tied and each with at least three bullet wounds in the head.
Chief editor Abner Guoz of Nuestro Diario said Castillo was a reporter for his paper and urged authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
Human rights prosecutors issued a statement condemning the deaths and saying De Leon worked for a local broadcaster.
At least seven journalists have been killed in the last 10 years in Suchitepequez, a hotbed of drug trafficking.
