TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:
Toronto Stock Exchange (13,430.01 down 12.76 points):
Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Up 35 cents, or 1.75 per cent, at $20.40 on 6.11 million shares.
Coastal Energy Company (TSX:CEN). Oil and gas. Unchanged at $18.84 on 5.76 million shares. Compania Espanola de Petroleos SA announced Tuesday that it will buy Coastal Energy for $2.3 billion, including the assumption of $51 million of net debt.
Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Miner. Down 73 cents, or 3.91 per cent, at $17.94 on 4.45 million shares. The gold sector led decliners on the main index, falling 3.70 per cent to 163.95 points as the price of bullion fell $15:50 to US$1,258 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Goldcorp Inc. (TSX:G). Miner. Down 80 cents, or 3.16 per cent, at $24.51 on 4.17 million shares.
Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Down 22 cents, or 4.25 per cent, at $4.96 on 4.01 million shares.
Toronto Venture Exchange (915.02 down 8.50 points):
WesternZagros Resources Ltd. (TSXV:WZR). Oil and gas. Down eight cents, or 8.60 per cent, at 85 cents on 43.1 million shares.
Malbex Resources Inc. (TSXV:MBG). Miner. Up half a cent, or 33.33 per cent, at two cents on 4.03 million shares.
Companies reporting major news:
Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Plane and train maker. Down two cents, or 0.43 per cent, at $4.66 on 3.22 million shares. A group led by Bombardier has been selected as the leading contender for a rail contract to be awarded in December by the Australian state of Queensland. The state’s transportation department is in the final stages of negotiating the purchase of 75 six-car trains as well as related maintenance services.
Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX:RCI.B). Telecommunications and media. Down nine cents, or 0.19 per cent, at $46.71 on 613,700 shares. The big telecom will open a new data centre in Calgary in January and expand its Edmonton data centre. They will be part of a newly created unit, Rogers Data Centres, which has 14 locations in nine cities across Canada.
