Edmonton police say people who stepped in to help a man being stabbed on a train platform during morning rush hour likely saved his life.
Officers have said the suspect did not know the 19-year-old victim.
Witnesses reported that the man was stabbed several times in the chest before bystanders pulled the attacker off him and performed first aid.
The attack Tuesday at the light rail transit system’s South Campus station was followed by a series of other random crimes, including a store robbery and a carjacking.
Mario Bigchild, who is 24, faces various charges that include attempted murder, aggravated assault and robbery.
Police say the stabbing victim remains in hospital.
“The (Edmonton Police Service) would like to thank the citizens who stepped in to assist the 19-year-old male during and immediately after the reported attack,” police said in a statement Wednesday.
“The citizens undoubtedly prevented further serious injuries to the male and likely saved his life.”
